With Arkansas's victory over Kansas State tonight, the book is finally closed on the SEC's 2011 bowl season (excluding the NC game, of course). There had been a perception during the course of the year that outside of Alabama and LSU, the rest of the SEC wasn't very good.
That theory is now under duress. The "rest of the SEC" went 5-2 against their out of conference bowl opponents. Although only one of their five victories was a blowout (Auburn/Virginia), in each of the other four wins, the SEC team won handily. One of their two losses, on the other hand, was an overtime nail biter (Georgia/Michigan State). The second loss was by Vanderbilt. the league's perennial doormat.
Consider this. Five of the seven "rest of the SEC" teams played a total of nine regular season games against Alabama and LSU. They lost all nine games by a cumulative score of 329 - 84. I guess the correct two teams are playing in the final.
This must be the zenith of the SEC's six year reign of terror over college football. There can hardly be a higher level of dominance than to have your own top two teams meet in the final, while the rest of your league dominates the other bowl games.
The wheel will turn. The decline could be sudden like the Inca Empire or drawn out like the Roman Empire. But there's no doubt that the beginning of the decline will be measured from this point in time.
